Someone I worked with several companies ago would ask for my opinion about something and then tell me that I was wrong because of some detail that they did not tell me about in their presentation. Sound familiar?
When I think of how most people ask for support or help, like this person, what they are doing is outsourcing their thinking to someone else to tell them what to do.
It is laziness and builds in an excuse of something doesn’t work out—they can blame you for what happens even though they offered incomplete information.
Instead, ask them what they are thinking of doing and why.
If they tell you they don’t know what to do, send them away until they have a few ideas that they can discuss in detail with you.
If they return with something they threw together and can’t defend within two questions, tell them to stop wasting your time and come back when they have done the work.
Although they will probably be mad, you and they both know you’re right.
