No BS Career Advice: October 6, 2024
By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
I did not do an issue last week because I live in Asheville, NC and by now you know our town was hit hard by Hurricane Helene. No power. No Internet. No water. No stores open. No gas. When we found a store open, it was 25 miles away and cash only with a 3 hour long checkout line. No banks open or ATMs available. Although my wife and I were safe as was our house, without water to flush toilets without constantly going to a stream to replenish water with buckets, this was not sustainable. For the foreseeable future, we are staying at my mother-in-law’s condo in New Jersey. I am appreciative to her but feeling my frustration rising at being a child in a parent’s home.
I’ve started working again but I left my mic in NC. As I write this, I have been on hold with my prescription drug plan trying to get a prescription transferred to NJ so I can get it refilled locally. So far the wait has been 2 hours with no end in sight.
Today, I am not feeling patient.
I applied for the $750 grant from FEMA to help people displaced by disasters and was turned down despite being without water (what do you do about flushing your toilet without water) and power and temporarily moving to my 90-year-old mother-in-law’s condo in NJ for the foreseeable future with a few items of clothing. I applied and our application was auto-rejected within an hour.
So, I will distract myself by writing this newsletter for you instead of getting angry. At the end, I am going to make a request for support.
