No BS Career Advice: July 31, 2024
By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
Rachel Cromidas writing for LinkedIn News wrote, “American workers are feeling more and more pessimistic about their career prospects, according to LinkedIn’s latest Workforce Confidence survey. Workers’ confidence in their ability to progress in their careers over the next year has fallen by 5 points since the start of the year (from +29 to +24, on a scale from -100 to +100). That’s the lowest level since the survey began in 2020. The drop is particularly pronounced for men, the survey shows, even though they have historically reported higher confidence levels than women.”
It should not be surprising.
After all, LinkedIn user staff reductions have run counter to what has generally been optimistic reporting of the job market by media since the job cuts for college-educated professionals began with Meta/Facebook’s staff reductions in November 2022. Since then, my feed is heavily populated with Open-to-Work requests for support and ads.
Yet every month, we read of a roaring job market. As I have pointed out for almost two years, you are being gaslit by the reports showing a heavy dose of part-time jobs and jobs not associated with LinkedIn users (government, social services, leisure and hospitality, healthcare, and construction).
Even when people comment on articles about the job market, it is rare to see any economist pointing these details out to readers.
Don’t let yourself feel bad. It’s not you. It’s them.
