The nature of jobs data in the United States is going to radically change with the March report for February. Why? US governments, federal, state, and local, have been the primary driver for job creation in the US for 4 years.
If you read the jobs report, with the exception of the immediate aftermath of the post-Covid period when people began to return to work, government, we well as social services and healthcare (the latter two are funded by the government), were the primary drivers of the new jobs created numbers.
The US government has frozen its payments to NGOs and others while it audits contracts. This past week, approximately 200,000 provisional US government workers lost their jobs. Extended family and friends who depended on government payments for services have told employees they won’t be paid. Some have lost their jobs. These will all be reflected in the March jobs report.
Then in mid-March, there will be a battle over a final funding bill for the US government for 2025. Don’t be surprised if there is a government shutdown where one side claims the other is going to starve poor people and the other says the path we are on is unsustainable.
Buckle up. Conserve capital. We are experiencing turbulence.
