How to Figure Out What to Do With Your Life
Hi! I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter and I’ve got a LinkedIn tip for you today. Now you all know that some of the most important real estate on your LinkedIn profile is the skills and endorsements section. I want to make sure I have the name correctly. This is a place where on your profile, people can choose areas of expertise that you have and just with a simple click of a mouse, endorse you for those skills.
Here’s where it becomes problematic and that is when they pick things that are irrelevant to what you do. So, for example, in my case, I see things like SDLC and I’ve gotten 99 endorsements for it. Of all the ridiculous things!
So you know what I’ve chosen to do is, before I noticed that I was up at 99 and I know people are just trying to be helpful, so number one, ask for endorsements. Number two is tell people what you want to be endorsed for. Number three, if you have items and I don’t expect you to get up to 50 as quickly as I did because you know I was a relatively early adopter of this functionality on LinkedIn and people just started to click away like banshees, so what I want to encourage you to do is if you see items that people are endorsing you for that are irrelevant, get rid of them. Tell people what you want to be endorsed for in your profile.
You can do something as simple as say “I want to be endorsed for such and such if you want to endorse me. This item and this item are the ones that I prefer I would like you to endorse me for and that directs them into choices. But if you have something there that has gotten like a runaway freight train like SDLC has done on, do one of two things. Number one is you can get rid of it if there are relatively few numbers and number two is if you’re one of these people like me who has 50 different items because that’s the max that LinkedIn allows, move it to a relatively low position. It’ll deflect the tension but still show that you’re getting endorsements for it.
