Making Excuses
By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
Coach Alex Freund shared these thoughts:
TIRED AND EXHAUSTED. It is because of the endless Zoom calls. But why? People had many meetings in the past, right? But they were in person. So, what gives? Video calls require extra energy to pick up on non-verbal cues such as body language, energy, tone of voice, and facial expressions. And another small difference: in-person silence is normal and acceptable, however, silence when staring at the other person is awkward and creates anxiety. When on a Zoom call we see ourselves and we continually judge our appearance, movement, and demeanor which in some cases can lead to vulnerability. These are a few factors that result in physical and emotional exhaustion. What has been your experience?
What’s the Difference Between You and A Coal Miner?
I replied, “There are a million reasons why people make excuses for mediocre performance. Zoom meetings, in-person meetings, meetings, too hot in the office, too cold in the office, too hot outside, too cold outside. Sometimes the excuse is a lack of control over their work and their decisions or too much control over it. Invariably, the excuses boil down to “I don’t care enough to push through my resistance or I tolerate my circumstances so I will be a victim. Don’t accept mediocrity in what you do. EVER. Accepting mediocrity is a cancer that slowly devours us. So, as SNL character, Roseanne Rosannadanna repeated. “If it’s not one thing, it’s another. We could have the most perfect conditions (and we do) and would find a reason to complain. If you don’t believe me, imagine a day when you are in Africa digging for the minerals that are needed for America to build electric cars. https://www.theverge.com/2022/2/15/22933022/cobalt-mining-ev-electriv-vehicle-working-conditions-congo
So, to sum up, using the Steven King quote from The Shawshank Redemption, “Get busy living or get busy dying.”
