Looking Like Everyone Else | Career Angles

Business has a way of trying to “homogenize” everyone so that their skills are commoditized. You are replaceable more easily if you are someone who does the same work as the person on your left and on your right.

From your vantage point, if you think of yourself as being unique but do what everyone else does in the same way as everyone else, how unique are you?

You aren’t. You have been “systematized,” “homogenized,” “turned into mush” and made to conform.

Yet, people, even in business admire the free thinkers. We look up to Crazy Steve Jobs as a symbol yet few businesses would have ever hired him when he was 24.

Frank Zappa, the hard to define musician composer and writer from the last century said, “A mind is like a parachute. It works best when it is open.”

Business tries to close minds to encourage “team players.” I interpret that as “shut up and do what you’re told.” They may say they want team players but what is best for them and for you is for you to keep your mind open and be unique. Be great.
