Someone on LinkedIn wrote, “Before you talk to a recruiter about salary, you need to do some research and figure out what your skills, experience, and qualifications are worth in the current market. You can use online tools, industry reports, and salary surveys to get a range of salaries for similar roles and locations. You can also ask your network, mentors, or peers for their insights and advice. Having a realistic and data-backed salary expectation will help you avoid asking for too little or too much.”
Why Don’t Companies Include Salary Information When You Apply
I replied, “There is no amount of research that can prepare you for answering any questions about salary until you speak with a hiring manager about their expectations, the position, the schedule, etc. Instead of giving them a number, tell the recruiter that all you know so far is what is in the job description which may or may not be accurate. BTW, what is the salary range for the role? After you know more, you’d be happy to answer the question. If pressured, make it clear that you are not committed to that figure or range. After you know more about your role and responsibilities, etc., you can circle back if they are interested to discuss it with them. Their intention is to commit you to a number way before you know anything.”
