Wimbledon offering some wonderful career lessons for those who wanted to look for them . . . like me.
There are obvious ones from the men’s finals about determination but I would like to focus on the women’s final between Serena Williams and winner, Simona Halep.
Listen to the experts and your friends and the winner was going to be Williams. After all, Williams had only lost one match to Halep and won nine.
Yet Halep carved her up on the court.
There are many “experts,” “Know-It-All’s” and “Know Nothings” you will meet in your career who speak authoritatively about what is going to happen. Some may have “informed” opinions but the game is played between the lines and, in fact, they don’t know.
Listen to what people say, pause and form your own opinion, knowing that people tend to permit themselves to be herded like sheep in a particular direction.
I confess, at times, I have been one of the “know nothings” at times in my life (ask my wife about what type of snow shovel I told to buy for our first house and she will tell you how I spoke with certainty about a subject I knew nothing about).
I have to practice to remember when I know nothing and when to speak and when to admit that what I am saying may not be right.
Maybe you do, too.
