Job Search Lessons from Super Bowl XLIX
By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
I’ve blogged about job search lessons in sports, particularly the Super Bowl for a long time. Yet this game offers the most succinct and poignant lesson I have heard a player say.
The game came down to one play. Second down, one yard from the goal with less than a minute to play, Russell Wilson’s pass was intercepted by Malcom Butler, a reserve rookie who had been beaten two plays earlier and looked like the goat of the game.
Instead, he recognizes the play called, steps in front of the receiver and intercepts what would have otherwise been a winning touchdown pass.
Bad call? Only because it failed. If it works like the gutsy call in the first half with 6 seconds on the clock before halftime that scored a touchdown, the Seahawks rolled the dice, but this time, crapped out.
Interviewed on the field after the game, Butler was asked, “What went through your mind?”
Butler replied, “It all comes down to preparation.”
Bingo!
Being ready for important moments no matter who you are and what the circumstances are is critical in interviewing, job hunting, salary negotiation, any aspect of job search.
Yet too few job hunters prepare for these moments.
Not Butler and the New England Patriots won the Super Bowl as a result.
