In a recent interview for Adidas, Yankee right fielder Aaron Judge was asked about being the “new Derek Jeter.”

“He paved the way for sure,” Judge said. “That’s the thing that I’ve been fortunate to be with the Yankees, the legends we have coming in and out of the building during spring training, during the season, just checking in. The Jeters, the Mariano Riveras, Andy Pettitte, Ron Guidry, all those guys. Reggie Jackson. It’s no joke, man. You feel that presence. “

He continued on to say, “I want to set that path for the guys coming up behind me that are in rookie ball, that are in low-A. ‘Hey, this is how we do things here. If you want to win, you want to be champions, you have to put the team first, you play hard every day and you do it for the team.’

There is something that you can learn from those who preceded you and had great success. It teaches you your relationship with your history, something that in US culture is pretty regularly ignored and outright damned.

It doesn’t take a lot of time but you notice how people carry themselves in the confidence that they represent themselves with in their dealings. As in baseball where successful hitters and champions fail 7 out of 10 times, one of the big lessons is about resilience and how you learn to bounce back.

Another lesson, as Judge points out, is putting the team first. The third is being the legend for others.

Even at work, you represent a connection with the past and with the future. How will you want to be remembered?
