Have you ever asked them about their process?
“How do you find people to refer for jobs?”
“Our firm and I have long standing relationships with people in the field and do the hard work of reaching out to them to find the people who they know who might be interested and available.”
Translation: “I start by mass emailing my database by doing a search of people who have certain keywords to see if they know anyone. From there, I move on to LinkedIn and do a search there. From there, I will complain to you that there is no one available within your price parameters and try to persuade you to increase the salary for the job.”
“How do you qualify people?”
“We personally interview everyone to determine whether or not they have the skills, experiences and personality fit for you and your organization.”
Translation: “We ask them, ‘Have you worked with _____________ ? For how long?’”
“Do you check references prior to submission?”
Translation: “Not at the time we submit a resume to you. If you want us to check their references prior to receiving an offer from you, we would be happy to do that so that we can round off the rough edges in the reference that we forward to you so that we are fee.”
Don’t believe the BS. Trust but verify. Ask people who you interview for jobs with questions they were asked by the recruiter prior to submission. You may be in for a shock.
