Hack the Hiring Funnel

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

The standard job application process is a rigged numbers game designed to ghost you and guarantee burnout. Bypassing the ATS with a high-intent outreach strategy forces human decision-makers to evaluate your actual worth. Execute this playbook to get internal referrals, anchor salary negotiations at the top of your market value, and dictate your total compensation package.

You send out dozens of resumes, hear nothing back for weeks, and then receive an automated rejection email at two in the morning.

This is the hiring funnel. At the top, hundreds of candidates apply. Soon after, an Applicant Tracking System, or ATS, filters out most resumes based on keywords. Some postings are ghost jobs—roles listed with no immediate intention to hire. What remains is a small fraction of applications that actually reach human eyes.

Recruiters spend only a few seconds reviewing each resume. They look for specific titles, recognizable companies, and quantifiable impact. If your application doesn’t clearly demonstrate this at a glance, it gets passed over. Even qualified candidates get lost in the noise when hundreds of people apply for the same role.

To break through, you need to change your strategy. Instead of relying on quick-apply buttons that yield low response rates, focus on high-intent applications.

High-intent applications involve researching the company, reaching out directly to hiring managers or recruiters, and tailoring your resume to highlight relevant achievements.

When you connect directly with key decision-makers, your application skips the automated filter and goes straight to a person. A hiring manager reading a tailored, high-intent resume is far more likely to schedule an initial conversation.

During the interview stage, preparation is key. Understand the company’s goals, demonstrate how your skills solve their specific challenges, and communicate your value clearly.

When negotiating an offer, remember that salary is just one component. Look at the total compensation package, including bonuses, equity, vacation time, and flexible work arrangements. Setting a strong, well-researched anchor during discussions elevates the final offer.

Even when internal factors like budget freezes slow down the process, staying proactive and maintaining high-intent strategies gives you the best advantage in navigating the hiring funnel successfully.
