I remember when I consulted to my last search firm and be asked to attend meetings. 30 people packed into her room for 20 and within a few minutes most of the heads were looking down, the people standing at the door appearing in were looking for an exit, and arms were folded in front of chests, people saying nothing.
Individually we all decided that the meetings went dull and pointless.
When faced with dull, people wisely choose to tune out, not contribute, and disappear in the hopes that these dull moments will go away.
And they must go away if you want to get the best performance out of people.
Being dull doesn’t help someone become their best. It is indicative of systems that focus more on the system than they do on the people and their performance.
People are not systems. They operate best within frameworks, not systems.
Create a framework that everyone can understand and turn your people loose in it. Some people will thrive and others won’t.
Protect the ones that are targeted by the successful ones. It is common for the successful ones to mock, challenge, and otherwise ridicule others.
You need them all.
Sometimes, like in the bad old days of Wall Street, and needs to be more regulation to protect the consumer and the staff. After all, people sometimes get out of control.
That is why there’s a framework. It defines what is in bounds and out of bounds.
Destroyed dull. Create variety. Create frameworks. Create success.
