Do You Really Need a LinkedIn Profile?
By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter answers this question once and for all.
Hi, I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. And I want to ask—answer a question that someone sent to me about LinkedIn. And the question is, “Do I really need a LinkedIn profile? I mean, living without it…” Well, basically this person says, “I’ve been living without a profile for a long time. What do I really need it for?”
And the answer is, yes! You need a LinkedIn profile.
You know, for those of you who only think you should be in the position of looking for a job when you are in need of a job, you may not think LinkedIn is important. But the thing that a friend of mine said about LinkedIn is that when you want to be hunted, you have a great LinkedIn profile. When you want to be the hunter, you have a great resume. Follow that one for a second.
So, when you want to be sought out and found by the wild game hunter, you have a great LinkedIn profile so that people can locate you. “Well, I’m not looking for a job.” Well, who cares? You know, after all, one day your employer can walk in, as they’ve done to so many millions in the last recession, and decide that they don’t need you anymore, and then you’re out of luck.
So, yes, have a great LinkedIn profile. And if someone calls or someone InMails you, be polite. Log on at least daily—it only takes a minute—and start connecting with people. Start doing things that put yourself in the position of found, of being found, not by just having only your employer names on the LinkedIn profile, but by talking about what you’ve done and how you went about doing it. Treat it like a quality resume that you’re writing that goes into depth with what you’ve done and how you went about doing it. And yes, put your email address and phone number in the summary line so it’s easy for people to reach out to you.
I’m Jeff Altman. Hope you found this helpful. Visit my website, thebiggamehunter.us. There’s a lot there that you can watch, listen to, or read to help you find work more quickly. And if we’re not connected on LinkedIn, send a connection request to linkedin.com/in/thebiggamehunter.
Last point I want to make is, you know, for those of you who are out there looking for work, you know, frankly, you need advice and help, because most of you don’t really know what you’re doing well. As people who have written to me many times have said, my, my podcast, “Job Search Radio,” has helped them so much from listening to it. But you still may be making mistakes.
So instead of trying to figure it out on your own and going on one interview after another and not knowing what you’re doing wrong, or worse, not even getting to the interview stage because, you know, frankly, you’re making mistakes that you don’t know what mistakes you’re making, let me do a makeover for you. You know, reach me, you can find out about job search makeovers at my website, and you can also order one at the site as well.
I’m Jeff Altman. Hope you have a great day. Take care.
