Developing Authority at Work | Career Angles

There are so many ways that people allow themselves to be seen as small, rather than enormous. Every time you present yourself as small, you signal that you are not worthy or deserving.

Here are three ways to start stepping up and commanding more respect.

  1. Expect to and ask for more information. Many businesses conduct themselves like my family did when I was growing up—The House of Secrets. They relinquish information on a need to know basis and grudgingly. Start to ask for what you need. If you are asked why you need to know, answer, “It affects what I’m doing.” “How?” Then stare at them for a full five seconds. “In the amount of time this discussion has been going on, I could have received what I needed and moved on back to work. If I’m missing data, I may not connect the dots you want me to connect and miss things because you tried to keep a secret.” Then ask your question again. Slowly. Softly. No anger. Firmly.
  2. Build alliances and relationships at work. Network up and not across or down. Create positive impressions with leaders and never EVER complain. You are at worst trying to figure something out.
  3. Drive revenue. People who make rain have more clout than people who are an expense. Figure out how what you do helps your firm make or save money
