There are people who sound the alarm and set off the panic. They are like canaries in the coal mine who let the miners know that they are at risk of carbon monoxide poisoning (with the canaries with do is die and that would signal to coal miners that they need to get out of the mine).
Often, office chatter and hysteria become rampant.
Anticipatory anxiety sets in as fear starts to spread.
Cooler heads need to exist in the midst of, “the sky is falling,” voices of doom.
Take a mental inventory of what is really known.
How much of what you are hearing his opinion and how much is fact.
Ask yourself, “what needs to happen now,” before starting to run around like a chicken with your head cut off because other people are scared.
Usually, there is a need for more information. Not opinion. Facts. Information. Data.
Get it.
Once you have it, the next question is, “what’s possible now?”
Keep the cool head and drive the conversation.
That’s what leaders do.
