Can I Reapply for a Job I Was Turned Down For?
By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
This is a very common scenario for people. In this case, a person saw that the job that they were turned down for was still being advertised four months later and wants to know if they should reapply. Here are my thoughts.
I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I coach people. I do career and leadership coaching.
I’m the head coach for JobSearch.Community. And basically, what I do is I help people with finding work, managing and leading, hiring more effectively, a host of different things that translate into being more effective in the workplace. Here’s a situation that someone presented to me. A job has been advertised for four months.
They were rejected a while back and they believe they’re qualified for it. Would you reapply? Now, the mystery in all of this is what’s changed? What’s changed from the time of the original rejection until now? Were they rejected at the resume stage, in which case, an improved resume and explanation for the changes in the resume can work? Were they rejected on the basis of an interview? And, again, the question is, between, let’s say, four months before and now, what’s different? How would someone be more qualified than four months ago to justify why a firm would invest time? That’s the mystery here that I don’t know the answer to. I would say, if it was on the basis of the resume, a rewritten resume to demonstrate the fit, an explanation for the rewrite, and perhaps changes to the LinkedIn profile, makes sense.
If it’s on the basis of an interview, probably not. Now, I want to be clear. If this is two years from now, and that position happens to pop up, there probably have been some changes.
Even a year from now, there are some changes. But four months? Probably not. So, your choice, depending upon what the circumstance is, figure out what’s right and take action.
