When you root for a team, one of the things you learn is that when your team is bad, reporters and teams conspire to sell hope to the fan base.

“This player looks terrific!”

“So and So has been training hard this off-season. They are going to be so much better!”

“The coach (or manager, depending upon the sport) has modified their system. They have simplified it.”

And then bad teams keep losing and good teams keep winning.

The same is true at work.

“We are hearing rumblings about (layoffs, reorganizations, promotions). Have you heard anything,” they ask.

“No, everyone is safe,” they assure people.

“You are up for a (raise, promotion). I have been advocating for you.”

“They have been in meetings but don’t worry. You’ll be fine.”

All are hustles designed to freeze people in place.

Its like they have learned it from our politicians who either want to scare us or have us trust them.

You can’t trust them.

It’s rare that you can trust your manager. After all, most of you have managers who are 10 rungs below where real decisions are made.

The people who scream the loudest know the least. They parrot what they are told to believe.

It’s all part of the hustle.
