I sat on a Zoom call last night with more than 290 others listening to presentation from the senior leadership of a not-for-profit that we’ve all been involved with for years.
There are making it difficult decision and want to make sure was being communicated to anyone who was involved with the organization in some capacity.
The pain that they felt in the care that they expressed in making the choice of striking to me.
All of us who are there trusted before we arrived and certainly after we left.
What’s often missing in major decisions is earned trust, accumulated over time and transparency, that allows staff to believe that what has been decided has been weight carefully and is the best that that can be done.
The trust is earned over time, not during the crisis.
Thus, whatever you’re making a decision, it’s important to understand the effect of that decision and how was communicated. The decision will either build trust or betray it.
If you’re on staff and decisions are being made, you want to ask, “what went on behind the scenes that led to this decision?” You may want to ask follow-up questions to understand, not to challenge.
It is an opportunity to learn and for you and your manager to grow in your trust for one… Or not.
What goes on behind the scenes is often the least communicated bits of information by our leaders until they write the book or until they visit the bar with few people and tell the stories.
It’s often the most important information that these to be expressed.
