There are few things more disturbing to most people than asking for a raise. It brings us back to childhood and asking for an allowance, fear of getting into an argument, some trigger that makes us feel unworthy or undeserving.
“I deserve it,” you may say angrily to yourself, to your wife, husband or partner . . . and then there is the fear that they will disagree with your assessment.
Maybe you’ve taken on more work, work that is more significant than what you did previously. Maybe, helped your firm make or save money. Maybe your work demonstrates that you’re a top performer on your team.
Make your case and, understand, your manager may not have the authority to give you the raise. Get to the person who does.
And when they stall you, understand that they value the impact of what you did as being worth less than you do.
Maybe it’s time to find someone who appreciates AND values you properly
