Why Is It Important to Consider Location in a Job Search?
By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
Here, I mentioned several reasons why location can be a factor with your job search. Don’t take them lightly.
Beware of Scammers During Your Job Search
Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I’m a career coach who helps people with a job search, with hiring more effectively, managing and leading, being more effective in the workplace in general. Now, the question I received is, why is it important to consider a location in a job search? I think it’s a great question.
And I know for many job hunters, especially those of you who have a visa, they’re willing to go anywhere. And that is a phenomenal quality to have. But understand employers don’t want you to come to them or move to them.
They believe that the interview process is going to be much harder for those of you who are willing to go anywhere. So, one factor is the employer thinking process, that they are less receptive to relocation situations than they are to a local individual. Now, if you are local, is the job within a commute.
I know for me, at one point, our family moved to a place two hours from where I worked. It was a tough commute. And yes, I sat on a bus every day and went to work.
And I slept on the bus each way. And it was a tough couple of years before we eventually moved elsewhere and I worked remotely. So, location is a factor in terms of whether you can get to work in foul weather, whether you can even get to work because remember my case with foul weather, two hours, and then there’d be snow and you weren’t getting anywhere.
So, employers like to see people within reasonable proximity. For some of you, you live in locations or would be working in locations where there’s no other employer near you. And thus, you’d have to move again.
And the impact on you and your family can be a problem because it’s constant moving is not going to be attractive knowing that you’re going to a place where there’s nothing else within proximity to you. Also, taxes come into play. Why is it important to consider location? You’re in an area where taxes are low and you move to an area where taxes are high.
There was a person I coached who underestimated what the cost of living would be and came to me to try and figure out how to re-approach the firm that had made her the offer to say to them, you know, if I weren’t moving to where you are in Seattle, I could afford to do it at that price. But then we went through a case and they increased the offer. So, there’s a lot of factors that come into play.
Some relate to the employer and their wishes. Some relate to you and your wishes. I’m Jeff Altman.
