No BS Career Advice: April 20 2025

“You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.” ~Wayne Gretzky
We spent last weekend through Tuesday at Hilton Head, enjoying beautiful non-beach weather (too cool and breezy to spend on the beach) with our son and two of his friends. They’re all heading back to Vermont on Tuesday and restarting work a few days later at the resort where they work.
He’s 24 and is doing very well on his own. We did well on many counts with him.
I created JobSearch.Community to supplement my job search coaching work by giving you video courses, books, and guides to help you with your search, as well as the ability to schedule coaching sessions with me.
Join me as an Insider at JobSearch.Community for advice about your job search and coaching from me (on Insider+, Insider Premium, Insider 30, Insider 60 or The Insider Bundle). You can also schedule a free discovery call with me to evaluate me as a coach.
There is free content there, too, on the home page. Plus sign up for weekly advice from me, different than what you find here.

Basic Advice for Landing a New Job
An application and cover letter are only part of what goes into a job search. And given how difficult it is to negotiate the job market, having a game plan for your job search is crucial. If you’re vying for a new position, the competition is fierce.
How should you choose which position to pursue?Â
Consider your ideal career for a moment before you begin your search. or at the very minimum, a position that plays to your talents. Consider: What comes easily to you? Next, use pertinent terms to locate roles that will put you on the right course to achieving your goals, rather than just randomly surfing job boards.
Hint: Concentrate on the particular role you want and identify what experience/keywords would be most effective for your search. Use this method to spend less time sorting through irrelevant listings.
Where should you start?
You can email your resume from your phone using job search apps. because you won’t need to spend all day staring at your laptop in order to get your next interview.
Indeed/LinkedIn/Glassdoor
You can look through open jobs on each and discover the salary ranges for different industries. Ensuring you are paid fairly is a smart place to start.
Job hunters can use the LinkedIn app to apply for positions and establish contacts with recruiters and hiring managers for possible employment.
Resumes?
Personalize your resume for the position you’re looking for. That implies that before submitting, you might need to make a few tweaks or revisions to make the fit obvious. AI makes it much easier to do this. Ask Yourself: Is your experience truly relevant to the job? Would that be clear to a reader, both automated and human.
What else can I do to simplify the job search?
Position yourself so that employers can find you. Modify  your LinkedIn profile to reflect that you are open for work, etc. Make your LinkedIn profile keyword-rich so that if someone is looking for someone with your background, they can find you. Be sure to select skills for each position and the About section that reflect your expertise.
Remember, when posting job openings, employers frequently get inundated with resumes. Employers often hire people who aren’t actively looking for work but might accept a new position. If you are approached by a firm, they may be willing to pay more to hire you and provide you with a superior role to the one you have. Be courteous, not rude. You never know when you might run into them again OR, based on previous rude behavior, never contacted by someone in the future even if you are qualified. Â
 Is networking still important?
Yes! In the job market, who you know still matters. Inform your mentors, family, friends, former colleagues, and everyone about your search. You never know who can put you in touch with your next position.
