Engage with Everyone During a Panel Interview

Engage with Everyone During a Panel Interview

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

The post read, “During the panel interview, try to make eye contact with each panelist as you answer their questions. This can help you build rapport, show confidence, and avoid focusing on one person. You can also use their names, acknowledge their perspectives, and ask follow-up questions to show your interest and engagement. However, don’t interrupt, argue, or ignore anyone on the panel. Be respectful, polite, and professional with everyone.”

I commented, “If you watch people being interviewed on talk shows, they begin answering questions by looking at the person who asked the question, then speak to another panelist and then another and finish by speaking to the questioner. This keeps everyone engaged in person. Online, it is helpful to keep the panel in gallery view and say, “Excuse me if I don’t make eye contact with you as I answer questions. This reminds them of that and gives you permission to just speak to the questioner.”
