Recruiters Are Not Your Friends

confidence | Jeff Altman, The Big Game HunterToday I’d talk with you and share a few tips for uncovering job opportunities that you might not thought of using.

I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. People hire me for no BS job search advice, and career coaching globally, because I made a job search and a few other things so much easier. So here are a number of things that you can do.

First, you can you might look for niche industry publications or small job boards that are specific to your field. Not the big ones, but do a Google search for smaller ones. You may even find them in a newspaper. Companies will often post openings here first before going broader.

Next, start attending local meetups or events outside your industry to network with all types of people. You never know who might know about an unposted role. Third, search patent filings to find fast-growing startups. You know if they’re filing lots of patents, reach out to them directly, even if they’ve never posted a job anywhere.

Next, keep an eye out for companies that just got new funding. New funding often means quiet hiring before public job posts.

Six subscribe to Google news alerts about companies that you’re interested in and look for hints of expansion plans. Growth means potential new roles. Pay attention to companies in your field who win new contracts or projects because increased work can signal openings to be filled.

Set up informational interviews to learn about growth at companies you like. Ask smart questions to get wind of openings. Volunteer for industry groups or nonprofit boards to build connections and hear about unposted roles. Check permitting databases for major new building permits that could mean a growing company.

Spend time researching niche job forums used locally or in your field to find uncovered listings. You can find those forums in many places. Don’t neglect Facebook. Last for today. Contact your local chamber of commerce. Many, especially those not in large cities, know firms that’re hiring.

I hope you find this helpful. I think if you use some creativity and persistence, you can uncover some really unusual opportunities that are hidden from public view. I’m Jeff Altman.
