Payroll employment increased by 943,000 in July 2021
Total nonfarm payroll employment increased by 943,000 in July 2021, following a similar increase in June (+938,000). Nonfarm payroll employment in July is up by 16.7 million since April 2020 but is down by 5.7 million, or 3.7 percent, from its pre-pandemic level in February 2020.
In July 2021, employment in leisure and hospitality increased by 380,000, with two-thirds of the job gain occurring in food services and drinking places. The average weekly earnings in this industry were $493.43. Notable employment gains also occurred in education and health services (+87,000), which has average weekly wages of $991.01, and in professional and business services (+60,000), where workers earn $1,350.56 per week, on average.
