By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
I’ve noticed a pattern with job hunters who have worked for one firm for a long time.

Negotiating A Non-Compete Agreement
Hi. I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. People hire me for no BS job search coaching and career advice globally, because I made the process of finding a job and succeeding at it much easier.
Years ago, I had a neighbor who spent 20-plus years working for a firm and after a while, she decided to change jobs. Now, I had a practice at that point, that I would be an advisor to my friends. I wouldn’t work to have them land in a job. I had a fee involved, and I struggled to balance the needs of my friends with my desire to earn an income.
So I said to her, let me be your advisor. And she found a recruiter who helped her change jobs. And three months later, she called me up and said, “I think I’ve made a terrible mistake. I need to leave again.”
And what I noticed, in speaking with her and with other people who’ve been in this same position, is that there’s a tendency that people have who’ve been with one organization for a long time, to romanticize what it’s going to be like at another firm, and they don’t dig in deeply enough to find out what’s expected of them and what the environment is really like.
They think basically, they’re exchanging their manager, and they’re exchanging their work, and they’re going to go someplace else, and everything is going to be perfect. It won’t be. As a matter of fact, somewhere in your first week or two, it’s likely that there’s going to be a moment where you’re going to say to yourself, “Oh, my G-d, I made a mistake, and want to go back.”
Now, I’m not going to encourage you to go back, that’s your choice. I’m not going to dissuade you. Again, your choice. But the grass isn’t always greener elsewhere. And you need to be prepared to ask questions that are going to allow you to flush out a lot of information in order to make sure you don’t make mistakes. Don’t just trust what they tell you. You want to try back channeling to get more information.
And I’ve got a series of questions at JobSearch.Community that are available for Insider members and above that will help you with those questions. But I’ll just simply say, there is a pattern, and it’s understandable. And you don’t want to be another person who makes this mistake.
I hope you found this helpful. I’m Jeff Altman. My website again is JobSearch.Community. Go there. I’ve got free information on the homepage. In addition, if you become an insider member, you get access to all my video courses, books and guides. And you can ask me questions through the site. I’ll respond quickly.
If you become an Insider Plus member, you’ll get everything that I’ve mentioned up until this point, plus we get on a couple of zoom calls a month. Become an insider Premium Member and we do individual coaching or group coaching, and you get everything that’s available through the site.
Have a terrific day and most importantly, be great!
