Why Don’t Companies Include Salary in Job Postings?

Although some locations now mandate salary info in job postings, most don’t. Here’s why.

A Bonafide Guide to a Midlife Career Crisis

Hi, I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. People hire me for no BS career advice, which can involve a job search, hiring more effectively, management, leadership, career transitions, dealing with workplace issues. I work with people globally, and I’ve worked in search for many years.

Someone asked me why companies don’t include salary in job postings. In some places in the United States, now, there’s a legal requirement to do so. Do a Google search for those locations where they are required to do that, because this is a moving target, with more locations likely to add on by the time you watch this video.

However, why don’t they do it? Two primary reasons. Number one is when people who are job hunting hear about a range of salary, I’m going to pick two numbers at random– $125 to 150. No one hears the $125. They only hear the $150, right? This goes up to $150. They don’t hear the $125. They don’t think of all the numbers between $125 and $150. Thus, if an offer is extended, ‘we’d like to make you an offer at $135,’ people become indignant. ‘Why didn’t you offer me the $150?’ It makes negotiating harder for them. So historically, they’ve tried to keep salary ranges, or at least the max number out of the listing, and use things like ‘salary commensurate upon experience’ to avoid giving an answer.

The second way involves their own people. Imagine you’re hearing, you’re working for a company and you hear that your company is willing to pay up to $150. And you make $125, for example. You become upset and you start thinking that you’re being taken advantage of. Maybe you are. Maybe you aren’t. I have no value judgment about that. But most people would think that they are. As a result, it starts to become a losing proposition for their own employees, and thus, they try to keep information out of the public listings to avoid losing staff.

So those are the two primary reasons. I hope you found this video helpful. If you did, and you’re watching on YouTube, share it, leave a comment, click the like button, and do something that lets people know it was worthwhile.
