There is the obvious reason why they ask and then there is the less obvious one. Let me explain.

Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I'm a coach who helps people with job search,
hiring more effectively, managing and leading, you know, being more effective
with workplace issues, in general. Someone asked a great question which is "Why do
recruiters ask if I'm applying at other companies?" Now, they're opposing this
During an interview which is . . . it could be a phone interview where they're doing an
initial screening it could be in a face-to-face interview but you know
they're being asked during some version of screening interview the answer really
depends on whether you're a corporate or an agency recruiter on the standpoint of
a corporate recruiter and, to some degree, an agency recruiter what they're
trying to find out is how far along are you in your process are you close to
another offer do you have a sense of what the money is going to be like in
that other offer or that other situation?. What's going on for you or other firms
finding you valuable? So, the idea is that you never make it seem like you're
exceedingly active because active job hunters tend to be devalued in the
marketplace but you can say you know. I've been talking with a couple of
firms that seem interested. They're talking about some decent money." "What kind of
money they're talking about well we haven't gotten to the phone number yet
but they're talking about a range of . . . " and you're talking about the numbers that
this firm, these firms are ostensibly talking about. "How far along are you?" "I'm like one or two interviews head
Seems like we're gonna be talking a couple of more occasions before an
offer would be made or they'd make a decision." .And the idea is to say it very casually
because you don't want to stress the agency or corporate recruiter or hell
You don't want to make the corporate recruiter, in particular, back off with
submitting you further because they were afraid that they won't be able to get to
the finish line with you as soon as these other things so speak casually
Do not make it seem as though you're very close to an offer expect to have one
later in the week. That won't work.. Now, here's the other reason that
involves agency recruiters. Every company you tell them about, every
firm that you identify . . . that's a lead for them and they're going to go try and get
that lead get the job to work on and try and fill it in effect creating
competition for you. I remember there used to be one guy in my old office who . . .
I'm gonna use an old company name that doesn't exist anymore . . . Bear Stearns "Ah, did you meet
with Jerry (whatever the last name would be)?" "No, I talked to so-and-so." "No, no." I don't know him. And the next
call will be to whoever it was that they had mentioned in an effort to
get the job lead. So, recognized everything that you're asked has a purpose to it and
when you reveal information it doesn't necessarily help you it helps the
recruiter decide something about you I'm. Jeff Alton hope you found this helpful
