Where is the Best Place to List a Board Position on My LinkedIn Profile?

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
It depends on the nature of the board assignment that you’re working on. Let me explain.

Why People Don’t Convert at the Final Interview

The question for today is where is the best place to put a board of directors
role on my LinkedIn profile?.

I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter and I
coach people. I help people with their job search, with hiring more effectively,
managing and leading, a whole host of things.

The easiest place to put it? I’m gonna work with the assumption you’re not on the board of Facebook, Apple,
General Motors, or any major American corporation. And I’m going to work with the assumption you might be
on of the board of a non-profit or some organization local to your community.

If I’m correct in that assumption, you list it under volunteer experience.
List the organization, list what your role is there. I believe
there’s a way that you can add a little bit of data there about what you’ve
covered there but fundamentally volunteer experience is the place to put
it.

Now if you are on the board of a major organization, you might list it under
professional experience. I wouldn’t place it in the prominent role that
might reflect the organization you’re currently working for. So for example
let’s say you’re an investor in an organization and you sit on their
board but your primary role is with a private equity firm. You list private equity there
and you might list board separately but you might under the private equity firm, indicate
that you’re on the board of such-and-such organizations, such and such
is associated with your role in private equity and again if you’re in a
mid-sized organization and you’re retired and you’re basically doing board work,
put it in as an employee or, let me restate that.
List it as a job there and that assumes you’re receiving income, of course.
