What Should I Include in a Thank You Note? | No BS Job Search Advice

What Should I Include in a Thank You Note?

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

What should I say in a thank you letter after an interview?

Write the note no later than 24 hours after the interview, even if the interview didn’t go well. Be concise. No one will read a “doctoral dissertation” length thank you note.

Address the note to the interviewer by name and, preferably, title.

Preferably, send a separate thank-you note to each person you met with, or, if necessary, send a single thank-you to a key person for distribution.

An example of how a single thank you note might start would be, “Thank you for the opportunity to meet with you and others to discuss my qualifications for the role of _________.” I would appreciate it if you shared my note with them.

Include a statement of appreciation for the opportunity to interview

Thank you for the opportunity to meet with you today and discuss my qualifications for the position of (fill in the blank)

Include a statement of continued interest in the job

I continue to remain interested in the position and

A brief restatement of qualifications and skills

I believe my experience with (say two or three previously discussed qualifications and skills) makes me both qualified and able to effectively deliver in the role.

Any additional background and experience you may have forgotten to mention or they did not ask about

In addition, one subject did not come up and that was my experience with_________ that I believe will be relevant and useful role.

Follow up on any websites, books, articles, or contacts mentioned.

In the interview, I mentioned an article I have read about . . . The name of the article is, “Name of the Article.” Embed a link to the article with its title or reference where someone can find it independently.

Date and time you will follow up as previously agreed.

As we discussed, I will follow up with you on Friday afternoon about the next steps in the evaluation.
