What Makes You Different?

Two Lessons from Sports

Hi, I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I coach people to play the game of life, their career, their work, big. HUGE and to really stand out from the pack. And I, what happens to a lot of people is, as you’ve seen from some of my previous videos, that people are encouraged to play small, to fit into a particular box that they’ve been trained in from the time that they were young, and trying to function in school, until maybe you got out of school, started working and you were told, “Shut up and do your job,” or they got that message, shut up and do your job.

But whether you’re job hunting or a solopreneur, in some way trying to build a business, being ordinary, being average, isn’t going to help you stand out, right? Because you’re just one of a number of people who’s doing this stuff. So, how do you stand out? What’s that quality within you that’s unique. Come on.

You’re going to think about, “what do you really love doing? How can that apply to your work? Or to your life? How do you really distinguish yourself using that at this point? That’s the secret sauce that’s going to make you successful.

You know, for me, who spent a lot of his career in job search, the fact that I create content for YouTube for easyzines and for a podcast, and a whole host of other media really makes me stand out from a lot of other folks so that people find me on the web. They like what see, they say they trust me a lot more than the average recruiter and I earned that trust with them.

Trust. This is part of my brand. Playing the game big is part of my brand. Helping you play your game big. I don’t presume to know that answer for you. When all is said and done, solopreneur, job hunter, small business owner, large business owner, being “me-to” isn’t a strategy that works.

Take a look at Apple. Take a look at Samsung. Take a look at everyone else. Apple . . . what makes its phones so unique? Well, it’s an iPhone and at the time it was released, it was an enormous hit, had a great product, and it stood out from everyone else. But Samsung makes a pretty good phone too. And has much of the same functionality. Some of it is thinner, it’s carried on the same networks, as many of the same apps. What makes Apple better? Well, it’s created a brand impression in our mind of being unique, different and cutting edge.

Is it always true? No, they’ve had a lot of product failures. But at the end of the day, that quality of uniqueness, of great design, is part of their brand and causes them to stand out in your mind. Samsung, the anti-Apple, you know, the one that creates a great product, but it’s not Apple, carried on all the same network. So, if it’s working, you know, frankly, it’s working on an Apple too. So, you know, it’s not like connectivity’s a factor here. But these firms have created great brands that allow them to distinguish themselves from their competition, and, frankly, everyone else’s an “also-ran” at this point, right?
