Hi, I'm Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I coach people. I'd love to help you with your search, not as a recruiter, but to help you avoid making the dumb mistakes that prove so painful to many job hunters.

So what do firms look for when they hire? Well, if competence was the only thing, all those incompetent people that you've worked with over the years would never have gotten hired, right? So, we know there are other variables that come into play beyond simply competence.

They look for self-confidence, character, chemistry, maybe a little bit of charisma, all of which translates into, "We trust this person. This person is going to do is right." That's because, from the employer perspective, they're not looking to date you. They're not looking to marry you. What they're looking for is a solution to a problem.

If you're a hiring manager or their boss, your biggest concern is someone's going to wind up calling them up and complaining about you. You don't do the job well. You are a problem individual . . . stuff along those lines. So the result winds up being, by looking for these factors, as well, they're hiring someone who they can trust in the role, who inspires confidence that they're the solution to a need. And, when you think about it, what they're saying is, "We need to feel (not know) but feel that this person will be a good dd to staff. That's what they really look for . . . someone that they can trust.
