When you examine your motivations for doing something and discover that one of them is that you are trying to prove something to someone, you are trapped in a narrative that is not in your control anymore.
They under your skin and, like an evil being in a horror movie, they are in control because you have bought into what they have said or done.
Being trapped is a form of imprisonment that doesn’t help you or serve you.
It just keeps the internal dialogue going for a while longer, even if you are ultimately victorious.
