What is your leadership style? That's the question for today. I'm Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I'm a coach who helps people professionally in a number of different ways. I'm a former executive recruiter, I now coach people one on one, in small groups designed to help people be more effective with their job search, hiring more effectively, managing and leading, workplace relationships, . . . workplace related issues in general.

This is a bogus question. After all, what do they expect to hear from you? Dothey really expect you're going to walk in and say, "you know, I'm a dominating sob. I'm a tyrant. I push people around. I'm a bully."

No one says that, of course. Everyone talks about a collaborative leadership style. They come up with this cockamamie story. And the fact of the matter is, there's no way to distinguish yourself with your answer.

Here's what I'd like you to do. Instead, I'd like you to pause for a second and say, "I'd like to answer the question. But I'd like to answer a better question than that. Would you mind if I posed a slightly different question that'll give you a better answer?"

They'll probably say, "yeah," or they may say, What question would you ask?"

"Could you walk me through your leadership journey? How did you get to where you are today and what did you learn along the way?" That question is going to give you a lot more of an effective answer. Because to me, I don't know how to really distinguish myself from other people in answering that question, because I'm sure everyone talks about their collaborative style. They're not a micromanager," And you become as dramatic and, you know, posturing as I am right now.

"However, if I answer a question about my leadership journey, how I got to where I am today, some of the lessons I've learned along the way, it's a longer answer, but I think it's a better one for you. And if I'm not the right person, based upon what you hear, great! No harm, no foul. But I th're ink you'll learn a lot about me.

Now, what they'll also have learned is by posing this question, you're demonstrating your leadership.
