Tough Interview Questions: The Ratio of Boys to Girls
By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
The full question is: In a country where people only want boys, every family continues to have children until they have a boy. If they have a girl, they have another child. If they want a boy they stop. What is the proportion of boys to girls in this country?
Now, this is a math problem and I’m just going to walk you through the solution.
The answer is going to be I pretty much a one-to-one ratio.
So, for example, let’s say there are n couples. There will be n boys and there is will be an infinite sum of girls equal to n/2 plus n/4 plus n/8 plus (and you keep going).
So, this translates into all these numbers add up to a sum of “n.
So, the proportion of boys to girls winds up being pretty close to one to one with perhaps a few more boys than girls because the sum isn’t infinite.
So, again, the math problem reads in over n/2 plus n/4 plus n/8 on and on and on all of which is ultimately going to add up to “n.”
So, at the end of the day, it’s can be pretty much a one-to-one ratio.
