Among the many things that the pandemic has taught us is how much our success and prosperity are dependent upon one another.
When one participant acts badly, it affects everyone.
It’s like that time when I was a beginner in recruiting and I was supposed to call someone the night before to schedule them for an interview and didn’t. It affected me, of course, it affected the client manager and her relationship with her client. It also affected the client who now had to backpedal with three people who are expected to meet my candidate. It affected the client because they might’ve hired this person had the problem solved once and for all. It also of course affected the candidate who had no idea that someone wanted to meet with them.
By the time they did get to the interview, they now may have had competition for the job that might not have existed had I just made the call that night, it may have cost them an opportunity that they might’ve otherwise gotten, it may have delayed their getting back to work and, thus, hurt their family.
My selfish laziness got in the way.
I’m sure you have your version of stories like this, too.
While we were in complete lockdown, we depended upon the systems businesses had in place to ensure that we had the food, the toilet paper, the hand sanitizer and so much more. When the system faltered, I know I realize how dependent I was upon the work of others. I suspect you did, too.
Minimally, do what is expected of you.
Ideally, do even more.
Be world-class and everything because good enough isn’t good enough.
Smile while you’re doing it.
