The Common Lament of Our Times

It is a common lament of our times to complain about our jobs, as though we are trapped by circumstances beyond our control.
“My boss is an idiot.”
“There is nothing I am doing that is interesting.”
“My company treats me badly (really your boss but it feels all-inclusive to blame everyone at your employer).
“I am in a dead-end job.”
Change isn’t easy. Doing something new isn’t easy. Being a professional doesn’t happen by pronouncing, “Today, I am a professional.” It starts with doing the work.
Although great athletes and entertainers all have coaches, not everyone needs one. I am not a fan of mentoring because the mentor announces their limitations at the beginning of the relationship.
“I don’t have a lot of time.”
“It ends when your employment ends at our company.”
A mentor can be this person if they learn to love you enough to really care about you and your well-being.
Yes, you read that right. I used the word, “love.” They have to love you enough to break their rules and want to help you.
You can have a knowledgeable wife-husband-partner be an ally throughout your career, not by always telling you what to do but by asking questions that allow you to figure it out on your own.
Some years ago, I started work with a trainer. I told her, “I’ve been trying to do the right thing for a long time and not getting results. I’ve decided to outsource my thinking to you and just do the work.”
