The Applicant Tracking System Isn’t There to Help You

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

When you apply for a job through the ATS, you have gotten on the company’s conveyor belt to be processed to a decision.

The applicant tracking system is a filter. Like a panhandler during the time of the California gold rush, sitting by the river, pan in their hand with a screen on top, dropping it into thecropped-whats-your-problem-1.jpg river and bringing it up to see if there was gold on top of the screen or silt that flowed through it, the applicant tracking system is there to screen people out to eliminate wasting time.

Statistically, when you apply for a job through an applicant tracking system, the probability is you’re going to be rejected. The primary reason for that is your fault— your resume doesn’t make a case for what you qualified to do the job.

But sometimes, occasionally, the system makes a mistake. That’s also your fault because you haven’t positioned the information that wants to see in the right place in the resume (earlier is always better than later) or close to other terms this looking for.

The statistics are that it takes 129 resumes for a company to hire a person. It takes eight when a source the person themselves through the room recruiting efforts or through employee referrals.

Shouldn’t you be spending more time connecting with people with firms that you want to work for and having them learn about how you can help that organization with your knowledge and experience than just spamming resumes?
