Talent Is Never Enough

Talent Is Never Enough

Watching the Alabama-Clemson football game last night, I was again reminded that talent is never enough.

Our goal is to put people in positions where they can be their best with the framework of a system.

For example, in an episode of a show featuring a makeover for a restaurant in Southern France, the owner was micromanaging his staff into a bad customer experience and bad food. Letting go of the reins allowed the chef and the staff to step up, recreate the menu (with support), and deliver a fine meal and great profits for the owner.

In the game last night, one team clearly outplayed and was outcoached by the other. The student beat the teacher again. Students will beat teachers, often because, when the student leaves, they are replaced by someone who is “good enough.”

For you who is leading or aspires to lead, having the talent and their potential replacements in place will help your organization when the inevitable key person leaves. You can recruit great talent but unless you put your team in a position to win, you will look outcoached and will be crushed.

Winners find the way to win. Losers have excuses (or as they say in polite circles, “explanations”). Clemson went out to destroy Alabama. Alabama went out to win.
