2 Buckets, 50 White Balls , 50 Black Balls . . .

making coffee

Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter offers the answer to this tricky hedge fund brainteaser: you have two buckets, 50 black balls and 50 white balls. How do you set up the balls in such a way as to maximize the odds that you had he will choose a black ball.

You have two buckets and 50 black balls and 50 white balls.

How do you set up the balls in such a way as to get the maximum is odds that you choose a black ball?

So that’s today’s brainteaser. I have more at ww.JobSearchCoachingHQ.com plus a lot more relevant information plus you have access to me to answer your questions and schedule some time with you so we can chat one-on-one for a few minutes to help you your the new job search.

In addition, there is a huge amount of content– all my books and guides, job hunting articles I’ve written, specific podcasts I think are helpful as well as videos about different elements of job search so come on over JobSearchCoachingHQ.com and join. Let me help you find work.

Let’s talk about another one of those wonderful hedge fund brainteaser questions. You have hundred balls two buckets 50 balls of black 50 balls with white how do you set up the two buckets of balls to give yourself the greatest probability that you choose a black Paul took it just repeat two buckets 50 black balls 50 white balls set up the balls in such a way as to increase the probability of choosing a black ball.

They ask this to try to get a sense of how you think on the spot.

So, here’s how it works.

Take one black ball and put it is one bucket. That gives you hundred percent probability on that side. On the other side, you put all the other balls. So one bucket has 99 balls of which 50 are white and 49 black.

The other has one black ball in the bucket and has 100% probability, the other one has slightly less then 50% probabilitylet’s round this up to 50% (it’s probably closer to 49 and half but for purposes this formula is is 50%) on one side is 100% and decided to have 50 so the probability is just less than 75%.

Those are really the highest odds that you can get. That’s of course, assuming that there is a completely random way that you choose balls.

Tough Interview Questions: Hedge Fund Brainteasers: What’s The Next Number in This Sequence?

Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter offers one of those fun interview brainteasers that companies use on interviews.

Summary

I've got one of those fun, tough interview questions for you. I'm going to read it off the screen. You'll understand why in a moment.
What's the next number in this sequence? 10, 9, 60, 90, 70, 66.
So, what's the next number in that sequence? I'm going to repeat it again. 10, 9, 60, 90, 70, 66
The answer, the question comes from not the numbers but the number of letters for each number.
So, 10 has three letters nine has 4, 60 has 5, 90 has 6, 70 has 7, 66 has eight. So your next answer could be (I'll give you two possibilities) 96 is one but, if you want to have some fun and really end the game right there, you can use googol. Google misspelled it when they started the firm, but you answer it with either 96 which has the next number of letters or googol.

Hedge Fund Brainteasers: The Three Knights | JobSearchTV.com

Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter explains how to answer this tricky brainteaser.

Summary

I love brainteasers. They suck during interviews because it is very easy to panic. That's often what a firm is looking for; that and the logic that you are using to dissect the problem. For me personally I enjoy the challenge. Here is 1 of the classics. I haven't done this 1 before but let's see if you can figure it out.

During medieval times when knights and barbarians for against each other, a man was captured and sentenced to death for allegedly befriending barbarians. The king however wanted to give him another chance and ordered him to his presence. He asked them to choose 1 of 3 knights who were present. 1 of the nights was the Knight of Life. He always tells the truth. The 2nd knight is the Knight Death and he always lies. The 3rd knight is the Knight of the Dungeon. He sometimes lies and sometimes tells the truth.

If the man chooses the Knight of Death, he will be executed before sunset. If he chooses the Knight of Life, he will be acquitted and set free right away; if he chooses the Knight of the Dungeons, you will spend the rest of his life in prison in the dungeon. This is the 1st time he's ever seen these 3 knights so we could recognize them and knew nothing about them. He is allowed to ask the knights one question each.

The man asked the redhaired knight, "What is the name of this blonde haired knight?" The reply was, "He is the Knight of Life." He asked the black haired knight, "What is the name of the blonde haired knight?" The reply was, "He is the Knight of Death." Then, he asked the blonde haired knight, "Who are you?" The response was, "I am the Knight of the Dungeon."

The man guessed correctly and let's see if you can.

Here's how to solve it. The redhaired knight said blonde was life. Red cannot be life. That would be a lie. The blonde haired knight said he was dungeon. He couldn't be life or that would be a lie. The black haired knight must be life. He said blonde is death which leaves red as dungeon.

That's the solution to the problem.
