Stupid Salary Negotiation Mistakes: Losing Your Cool
By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
Boy! Losing your cool is such a mistake whether you are trying to negotiate for a salary increase internally or improving the job offer!
The Top 10 Salary Negotiation Mistakes
Hi. I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. People hire me for no BS career advice that can involve a job search, hiring more effectively, management and leadership, help resolving workplace issues, career transition and so much throughout the lifecycle of a person and their career I help with.
Now, this is one of those stupid salary negotiation mistakes that people make and that is losing your cool. I don’t care if you’re job hunting, or you’re trying to get a raise internally and you have a number in your mind. And the person you’re talking with, is basically saying, no. They may say it in a nice way, like ‘I have to speak to so and so and get their input on it before coming back to you. I don’t know if I can really do this or if they’ll okay it.’
But they’re basically indicating that there’s a no forthcoming. How does this work? The person that they’re going to talk to, if they’re going to talk to someone, well, they don’t really know you. They don’t have a sense of what your value is. And thus, it’s easy for them to say no, because your manager, your boss has been claiming credit for everything you’ve done to this for this individual. Thus, it’s easy to say no.
Losing your cool, going ballistic, it’s a mistake because again, the person you’re talking with doesn’t make the decision. And even if they do, and they’re pretending, they’re signaling, they’re going to say no. So, I’d simply say to you that losing your cool as a strategy doesn’t work. Nodding and saying, okay, and then going and finding another job does, at which point they suddenly may go, not every time but sometimes they go ‘You can’t do that. We need you and suddenly they’re able to find the money.
You haven’t exercised leverage yet and momentum to carry this forward. All you’ve done is be a supplicant, asking for more. Thus, whether it’s for a salary negotiation for an internal role, or a salary negotiation because you’re you have an offer, there’s no reason for them to up it other than they’re being nice, and being nice isn’t always in their interest.
