Many people make the mistake of giving up their power in negotiations. Here’s what to do to avoid it. In the video, I mentioned a previous YouTube video I released about when it is all right to quit without giving notice. This is a link to the video:

I'm Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I'm a career and leadership coach and I worked in search for what felt like 100 years.

Here's a fact. Unless you're independently wealthy, and very few of you are, if you quit your job without another one, you're giving away all your power to employers, because suddenly, they have the negotiating advantage over you. Now, there are specific circumstances where I believe people should leave, do not pass go, just get the hell out of there. And I've covered that in another video. I'll put a link to it in the show notes.

But the idea that you have power to say "no," when you're watching your bank account, dwindle, and you're not getting other interviews, is fiction. You know that. So where you can hold out, and don't quit your job, do great work in the meantime, because mentally you're going to be better on your interviews if you're working hard, putting in best effort, blah, blah, blah. But the idea that when it comes time to an offer, you feel comfortable turning it down. without a huge bank account behind you is a joke, you know that.

So be an adult here. In being an adult, you're taking responsibility for yourself, your wife, husband or partner, your pets, everyone in the equation, so that you don't wind up being desperate, and acting desperate. Even if you take this bad offer, even if you take this job, it's a little bit less than what you're really looking for, you've got income coming in, and it can disappear from your resume while you find the best one.

Again, don't quit your job. It's foolish. it winds up being costly because you act desperate. And employers hate desperate when they interview. It's kind of like dating. You know, we don't like the desperate other person, right? What we want is the person who is a little bit, I don't want to say, standoffish, but is evaluating us too, right? And that's what they want. They don't want the one who's begging and desperate and hungry for a job.
