EP 1551 I talk about the impact of this stupid resume mistake.?
Recently, I received a resume from someone who said, "Give me advice." I'm staring at this 10 page monstrosity that someone sent to me thinking I'm going to go word for word and do a critique of the resume for free. I tell you what was wrong with the resume-- it was an 8 point font 10 pages long. You think anyone is going to really need point font. Look at me. I'm in my 60s at this point. The font sizes too small. The resume is too long. You're talking about things from 100 years ago that no one cares about if you got a job because of that experience from 10 years ago or more, you probably don't want to do the kind of work now, right? You really want to go back to what you did a long time ago? And, as a consultant, there were a lot of different places doing a lot of different things. 10 pages is just ridiculous. Emphasize the last few years. Minimize the older material. Get your resume down to 2 1/2, maybe 3 full pages TOPS! That's it. Put it in a respectfully sized font that people in their 40s, 50s and 60s can read because that's who the hiring manager is. Just be aware that if you send something that is obscenely rule, what you're doing is asking someone to hit the delete key.
