But, what if I am unmotivated? Like recently. A recruiter blew up my inboxes for about 3 months. Looking to staff a new manufacturing plant. My skillset exactly matches what they need and unfortunately for them I’m one of maybe 3 in a hundred miles radius. And we’re all employed and all know each other. Then, when I agree to an interview out of equal parts curiosity and courtesy, I get “invited” to take a skills assessment. And this will take about 5 hours of my time including travel. At that point I was most decidedly unmotivated. And after considering my options while they blathered on about culture this and that. I stood up and said “Thank you for your consideration but we are through here. Good Day.” HR in that case should have given me reason to be motivated. Making a lateral financial move, and a promotion on paper. But, in reality at my current employer it’s practically like working for yourself anyway. All while being “invited” to jump through hoops like a trained circus lion. No thanks. Epic HR fail.

I don’t think you were unmotivated. I think you were uninterested in a job for a lateral for which you had to take a lot of testing. That isn’t the same thing. AND, what you describe is a stupid HR mistake.
