We were trained to be “nice people.”
Be a “team player.”
Sit at your desk.
Do what we tell you to do.
Regurgitate information when we tell you to do it.
Or else . . .
The first threat is you won’t get good grades.
Without good grades, you won’t get into a good college.
Without good grades at a good college, you’ll get a job, but it won’t be a good job.
We get the job, and the message many people get is to continue to do what they tell you to do when they tell you to do it
A lifetime of following directions.
Sometimes, an organization needs someone who will break some furniture to change what is happening.
Sometimes, organizations need fire in the belly again instead of nice people.
The problem often is that the nice people are scared by the fiery people.
The fiery people rock the boat.
They see things the nice people don’t see.
Their passion scares them.
Most companies would never have hired Steve Jobs or Larry Ellison or any SOB visionaries who created enormous value.
Their willingness to break the furniture would have been more than they could handle.
