EP 1666 Why would a recruiter say that to a job applicant? What can they be signaling?

I'm Jeff Altman, big Game Hunter, the head coach for JobSearchCoachingHQ. com. That's a site with curated information that you can watch, listen to or read that's going to help you find work more quickly. I'm a career coach, I help people find work. You know, it's very simple. Lots of you are not real good at the process, even though you can do the job well. So, I don't want you to miss out on opportunities. I can help coach you throughout the process. And, to be clear, I am not a recruiter running even though I did that for more than 40 years.

Someone wrote to me with a question. "Should I be concerned if the recruiter says, 'we'll be in contact if you get the job?'"

Now, I know you're hearing this as "don't call us; we'll call you," and it is some degree it is that. After all, they are probably in the process of interviewing all lot of people right now and,, If they have to respond to all the phone calls, or emails that say something along the lines of, "Have you heard anything? Do I have it? Did I get the job? Oh, when am I going to hear," they'd spend a lot of wasted time. And it makes them nuts. Imagine 30, 40, 50 people and, remember, recruiters are not just filling one job. They are doing multiple jobs concurrently. Recruiters are filling lots of jobs.

And

They don't want to take all these calls and respond to these emails. It doesn't help them fill jobs. It may make you feel better . . . Although I'm not sure how you feel better if they say no, we haven't heard anything. . . But the follow up to this has to be something along the lines of "I know I'm not gonna hold you to anything, but could you give me a sense of the timeline for decisioning so I know that if it goes past that day, I'm no longer being considered." You see, what they're trying to do is managing expectations. And they can't respond the 30 or 50 people and debate with them is because people debate with them as to whether or not they should be hired for this job.

And they cry to them. And they really do cry because I've been cried to when I did recruiting. They, don't want to take a lot of time, in order to say, "I'm sorry. The manager chose someone else who they thought was better qualified."

blah, blah, blah. And they just don't want to deal with that.

So they're sending a message, number one is, the way you're going to know is if we get the phone call if you got a phone call or email for us, other than that, we're not interested. That's why I made that suggestion earlier. The other thing is, experience tells me if a company is really interested in someone, if they really want to hire someone, they take a lot more time with them.

They start selling someone on the opportunity. They don't treat them like toenail fungus, like, you know, this response suggests. You're just another commodity or slob. We don't really care. We'll let you know. They sell to them; they treat them with a degree of respect.

So, should you be concerned that the recruiter says, maybe, maybe not? Probability is, yes, you should be concerned because, frankly, they don't care. I want you to hear that one. They don't care about you. To you, it's the most important thing in the world. To them, they're going to find someone to fill this job and they're letting you know you're not important to them.

Do you want to go to work for a firm that sees you that way? That's your prerogative. You may be a beginner, and, as a beginner, you just need something. But the fact of the matter is, they don't care. Otherwise, they'll be selling you. Not telling you, "We'll be in contact if you get the job."
