I’m thinking of applying for a job soon but I don’t know if applying online or in person would be a better approach. Which one would leave a better impression on the place I would apply for?
I think the answer is easy.
Should I apply online or in person? I'm Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. And this surface for someone I'm coaching, whose parent tells child, "show that you're interested! Go there. Fill out the application. Drop off your resume. And that is so 1980s. I'm tel ling you, folks, you know, we live in a time where there's been terrorism and there are crazy people out there. And the first reason I tell people not to do this was from my own experience in search, where people would come to our office and expect me to drop everything, to spend time with them talking. They interrupted me on my work day. They had no idea of my schedule. If I deflected it to an admin, had no idea of their schedule. So the resume drop off is so old school; it's really not effective. . . Except if they tell you to do that in the ad, because most of you who do this will probably be in roles or positions, or looking for jobs, where they tell you to drop it off. If that's the case, great. But if you think it's a good thing to go to a major corporation, and drop off your resume, so this way they can see you, and, no one cares. All they see is someone who inconvenienced them. And thus, you wind up with a little negative checkmark, not the positive one that you're hoping for. So, I just want to remind you put yourself in their shoes. Is that the way that you want it. And if the ad says, "do it," then you do it. Otherwise, upload your resume. It's easily retrievable, and that way they can find your resume. Yes, you can follow up with a phone call or an email. But don't drop off your resume. Hope you found this helpful. I'm Jeff Altman. My website is TheBigGameHunter.us. There's a lot there to help you. And I also want to remind you, we've got a new service, that if you go to TheBigGameHunter.us/mock, you can do mock interviews there inexpensively, where you can do this 24x7 and I'll review your performance because you're going to record video there that I'll be able to see. And I've got a lot at the website, as well. Again, TheBigGameHunter.us. Go to the site, go to the blog, go explore. It will help you a lot. And connect with me on linkedin at linkedin.com/in/TheBigGameHunter. Hope you have a terrific day and be great. Take care.
I like your advice for full-time employment with larger employers, but I disagree with regard to part-time employment with small businesses. Meeting the manager and giving your resume can be VERY effective at this time when so many employers are desperate for workers. I would have liked to see your video address that.
Thanks for the topic idea!
