Over 50 and Job Hunting? A Friendly Reminder

I’m here to share six tactics to avoid losing steam in your job search and reignite yourself. I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. People hire me for no BS job search advice and coaching globally, because I make the process of finding work so much easier. And I do a couple of other things too.

Old manNow, the six tactics start off with, you’ve got to establish a routine for scheduling yourself, just as you would for your work and you have to make it non-negotiable so that you have structure and accountability. You’ve heard the phrase treat your job search like a job. And that’s part of the process here. You do have to start off with the assumption that this is your job now.

However, number two, job searching can be exhausting. Schedule time off to recharge. Go for a walk. Meet a friend. Practice self-care in one form or another. Taking breaks is not a sign of laziness. It’s essential.

Three, celebrate small wins. Even an interview or a new connection is making progress. Indulge in a small trip like a cappuccino or a latte, or a trip to the movies.  Stay motivated after you have a win.

Number four, stir things up. I know when I worked in recruiting, one of the things I used to do was when I felt like I was in a rut, I changed my desk and moved to another place in the office. Try a new networking approach. Maybe tailor your resume a little bit differently or rewrite the base resume a little bit differently. Reach out to more past colleagues that you’ve lost contact with. Shake up your routine so it doesn’t get stale.

Number five, and for those of you who are over 50 This is so important. Leverage your maturity, don’t hide from it. Your resilience, loyalty, and other soft skills make you an invaluable hire. Remind yourself of your unique value that you can bring to the next organization. And frankly, I’m going to tell you in interviews don’t hide it. Make sure you talk about your successes in the past and how you want to bring them to the next organization.

And lastly, for today, get support and stay connected. Loneliness can quickly lead to discouragement. Form or join a job seeker support group to talk with and exchange ideas. Join an existing networking group. There are 1000s of them in the US and around the world. Google them.

You’ll find that staying positive takes work but with the right mindset and tactics. You’ll find your next job sooner rather than later.
