No BS Job Search Advice: How to Get Paid More

How to Get Paid More

Getting paid more is deceptively simple. You get paid more by showing how your experience is going to solve their problem. If you go in the interview and passionately and firmly show your excellence, demonstrate mastery of the material, and reflect the personal leadership that they’re looking for, I can assure you that you’re going to get paid more than you are now.

I started blogging by enticing you with the numbers: wouldn’t you like to get paid $27,000 more than you are right now? What about $50,000 to $100,000 more?

How do you do it? Change jobs twice in the next five years. For the person making $27,000 more than they are now, all that requires is that you change jobs now and receive a $5,000 raise. $5,000 raises over five years plus a small 3% increase each year will be a little more than $27,000. Change jobs a second time after three years, receiving another $5000 raise, increases it to more than $37000.

From there, $55,000 is a $10,000 increase one time. If you change jobs a second time after three years, the figure is more than $65000.

Just think about it: if you get a $20,000 raise, as is going to be pretty common for most people working these steps, you’re going to be making close to $125,000 a year. And for those of you who are in roles where you can achieve a $50,000 increase now, even if you didn’t change jobs, that’s going to be more than a quarter of a million dollars over the next five years. It’s a lot of money to leave on the table, ignore or forget about.
